Extended Natural Building and Carpentry Workshop

September 2023

@ Lazuz, Portugal

Here is a glimpse of our recent 12 day womens workshop with 15 students from all walks of life, and every corner of the globe!

Our goal is to take the women on a journey to learn the art, un-tap their ancestral knowledge, to build with natural materials and ancient building techniques.

We put poles in the ground that have been cut and prepared from our forest, chisel crossbeams and learn how to work with our timber, create foundation systems that double up as drainage systems, stem walks with ceramic bricks set in lime.

We eat delicious fresh vegetarian food, we sing together, dance, share stories under the star lit sky. We allow ourselves to be all that we are, without judgement, we support one another on our journeys, feel seen, held, loved.

We learn how to connect with the earth, understand the soil and use our instincts to adjust our earth mix. We build walls, strong and straight, decorated with art and blessed with the hands that put energy into every mix.

We learn what it means to design an appropriate, ecological, energy responsive and functional house, one that adds to the natural eco system it will live within, one that comforts and charms it's inhabitant, one that works and flows. We give a voice to the landscape that will hold it, listening, observing, consciously design so that the two are paired like a life long marriage, each giving, each recieving.

We dance, we laugh, we share, we cry, we build!

We build a house, like we were never taught we could, we build relationships and connections, like I never believed we're possible, and it feels magical!

The beginning - foundations, rubble trench. Securing our upright poles. Carving and securing crossbeams

Phase 2! Building our walls - framing and filling. Adobe bricks, cob with glass art work and slip straw!

Final touches - reciprocal roof - plastering - windows - celebrations

We had the pleasure to be joined by photographer Jyoti Graziano (@jyotigraz/@jyoti Graziana Photography) on our last day on site - check out the beautiful moments she captured....
